India Cracks Down on Social Media Amid Growing Digital Economy Concerns
India is tightening its control over the digital economy by expanding its focus beyond cryptocurrency regulation. The country's parliament has scheduled a meeting with representatives from top social media platforms, including Meta, Google, X, and Snapchat, on August 3 to discuss regulatory concerns.
The move comes after 36 days of student protests at Jantar Mantar over the NEET-UG paper leak, where social media platforms played a significant role in organizing demonstrations. Protesters used Instagram to share videos, live updates, and organize protests that eventually ended with the resignation of the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The government intends to ensure that these platforms are not disrupting public order and will require companies to explain how they protect the privacy of women, children, farmers, rural communities, laborers, and the general public. This indicates that India is making significant efforts to bring clearer rules to the growing digital ecosystem.
