India Turns to Bitcoin Mining to Tame Solar Power Surplus

India is facing a problem due to its growing solar power surplus. With excess energy being generated, especially during peak sunlight hours, some of it goes unused because the grid cannot absorb it fast enough. This leads to around 11.5% of capacity going unutilized.

Prafull Billore highlighted this issue on social media, citing the lack of better storage systems and stronger grid infrastructure as major concerns. He noted that while India produces a significant amount of solar power, a large portion of it is wasted due to limited storage capacity.

One potential solution could be using Bitcoin mining to put some of this excess energy into use. Mining operations require powerful computers that consume a lot of electricity, which can be adjusted according to availability. This means miners could work more during peak solar hours when electricity production is high.

In fact, India generated around 8 terawatt-hours (TWh) of solar power that went unused, mainly during peak sunlight hours. Bitcoin mining could help utilize some of this excess energy, although it's not a complete solution to the problem. The country still needs better storage systems and grid infrastructure to manage its growing supply of renewable energy.

India is not alone in exploring the potential of using surplus renewable energy for Bitcoin mining. Countries like Brazil and Bhutan have already successfully implemented such projects, leveraging their abundant solar and wind power to run large-scale mining operations cheaply and efficiently.
