India's Central Bank Maintains Caution on Cryptocurrencies
India's central bank, the RBI, has reaffirmed its cautious stance on cryptocurrencies while promoting underlying technologies like distributed ledger technology (DLT) and tokenization. In a recent address, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra cited concerns over monetary sovereignty, monetary policy, capital flows, and the 'singleness of money' as reasons for the country's caution.
Malhotra emphasized that the central bank is focused on promoting technologies like DLT and tokenization to improve financial efficiency, rather than endorsing private cryptocurrencies. He noted that India already has a fast and low-cost domestic payment infrastructure, making cross-border payments the more pressing issue.
The RBI is currently testing tokenized corporate bonds, certificates of deposit, and programmable digital rupee settlement systems. The central bank has also been working on developing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) program, with several pilot projects underway.
