India's Crypto Regulation Efforts Hit Another Roadblock

India's crypto regulation efforts have hit another roadblock as a key parliamentary hearing on virtual digital assets (VDAs) has been cancelled. The meeting, originally scheduled for August 27, was expected to provide clarity on the country's approach to VDAs. However, the cancellation adds to the uncertainty in India's crypto regulation space.

While India's current VDA rules focus on taxation and anti-money laundering (AML) regulations, there is still no clear regulatory framework for the asset class. The delay has left Indian crypto investors anxious as they wait for a comprehensive regulatory framework that will define how different types of crypto assets, exchanges, and platforms will be regulated.

The parliament's proposal to create an interim self-regulatory organization (SRO) to oversee the industry until a broader regulatory framework is established may not materialize anytime soon. The RBI- Finance Ministry divide continues to complicate India's efforts to establish a clear crypto regulation framework, with the RBI remaining cautious about cryptocurrencies due to concerns of financial stability and other risks.

The cancellation of the hearing means that India will have to wait longer for a comprehensive regulatory framework. The country is likely to take a phased approach rather than introducing an immediate standalone crypto law. Investors will be closely watching the announcement of the rescheduled date of the parliamentary hearing, which could impact the industry's trajectory.
