India's GDP Growth Masks a Wealth Gap Fueled by Crypto Adoption
India's economy has seen rapid growth, with its GDP increasing by 7.8% in the April to June quarter of FY27. This is a significant improvement from last year's 6.9%. However, despite this growth, India's per capita income remains relatively low, ranking around 150th globally at $2,810.
The World Inequality Report 2026 highlights that India's top 10% of earners own about 65% of the country's wealth, while the bottom 50% own just 6.4%. This indicates a significant wealth gap in the country.
Young Indians are driving crypto adoption, with almost 75% of investors being aged 35 or below and 18-25 year olds accounting for 54.4% of new investors in Q2 2026. Bitcoin is becoming an aspirational asset for these investors, offering quicker gains than traditional wealth-building methods like property or mutual fund SIPs.
Bitcoin's global pricing also enables Indian investors to diversify their portfolios and pursue greater returns. Rising incomes could give Indian households more room for long-term crypto investments, making Bitcoin a viable option as a portfolio investment rather than just a get-rich scheme.
