India's New Closing Auction System Sparks Market Volatility
India's Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) introduced its new Closing Auction Session (CAS), sparking market volatility in Indian stock markets. On Monday, the Nifty 50 index surged nearly 200 points during the first-ever closing auction session, but on Tuesday, it erased part of those gains, trading over 210 points lower.
The unusual divergence extended to the Sensex, which rose only about 0.7%, far less than the Nifty's 1.6% gain. Market participants attributed this movement to low participation during the inaugural auction and limited arbitrage activity.
SEBI's new framework replaces the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) with a continuous trading period followed by a 20-minute auction session, where buy and sell orders are collected before an algorithm matches them at a single equilibrium price. This aims to reduce end-of-day price manipulation and improve execution for large institutional investors.
