India's Solar Surplus Meets Bitcoin Mining

India's solar power boom has created an unexpected problem: excess energy that goes unused. According to Indian entrepreneur Prafull Billore, the country's infrastructure can't absorb or store the extra electricity generated during peak sunlight hours, resulting in a significant amount of wasted power.

Billore noted that India generates around 8 terawatt-hours (TWh) of solar power that can't be used. This highlights the need for better ways to manage the surplus energy, and Bitcoin mining could be a potential solution.

Bitcoin mining uses powerful computers that require a large amount of electricity to operate. By adjusting their power use based on availability, miners could potentially work more during peak solar hours when electricity production is high.

The idea of using excess renewable energy for Bitcoin mining has already been implemented in other countries such as Brazil and Bhutan, which have partnered with mining companies to utilize their hydropower or solar and wind power. While this is not a complete solution to India's problem, it could be an additional way to use some of the power that might go unused otherwise.
