Sheriffs' Shift on CLARITY Act Paves Way for Crypto Regulation Momentum

Share

The National Sheriffs' Association has changed its stance on the CLARITY Act from opposition to neutrality. The organization had previously expressed concerns that certain DeFi setups, mixers, and non-custodial tools might slip past anti-money-laundering rules.

However, in a letter to Senate leaders John Thune and Chuck Schumer, NSA President Sheriff Troy Wellman and Executive Director Justin Smith stated that they are changing their position on the CLARITY Act to neutral due to its complexity and the number of important details remaining under consideration.

This shift removes a key law-enforcement objection to the bill, which could make it easier for lawmakers to pass the legislation. French Hill, Arkansas Rep., has been pushing for Senate passage and is urging them to collaborate on the bill, citing the House vote last summer that pulled in 78 Democratic votes.

The SEC Chair Paul Atkins expects a Senate vote by mid-September, adding momentum to the passage of the CLARITY Act. This development means one less barrier standing between crypto regulation and a Senate vote, potentially paving the way for clarity on rules and giving builders and traders cleaner rails instead of endless enforcement roulette.
