Institutional Crypto Adoption Shifts from 'If' to 'How'

A recent survey by Bitwise found that institutional crypto adoption is shifting from 'if' to 'how', indicating growing interest in investing in cryptocurrencies. The survey interviewed investment professionals from 15 large institutions, including endowments, foundations, public pension funds, and sovereign wealth funds.

The results showed that most institutions reported crypto allocations ranging from 0.5% to 13%, with most between 1% and 2%. Bitcoin was held by every surveyed institution with crypto exposure, while Ethereum and Solana appeared in smaller positions, depending on the investment thesis.

Bitwise noted that institutions have different approaches to gaining and managing crypto exposure, with some using spot ETFs as a route for easier access. Direct ownership remains an option for institutions with the necessary custody infrastructure.

The survey also found that governance structures can shape investment decisions, with more complex approval processes associated with smaller allocations. Career and reputational considerations also play a role in investment professionals' decisions.
