Institutional Crypto Trading Goes Dark as Volume Shifts to Private Pools

Share

A significant shift in the crypto market has occurred as institutional dark pools have quietly taken up to 15% of the total volume by June, according to a report by sFOX. This rise in execution through dark pools comes from negligible volume in April and is expected to contribute to deeper order books and tighter spreads once flow lands on public venues.

sFOX's July 30 report reveals that OTC-desk routing accounts for 77.7% of institutional volume moving through the platform, while only 18.4% lands on public exchanges. In May alone, dark-pool volume reached $147 million, with little or no visible order-book signal.

The change is described by Diana Pires of sFOX as structural, likening it to the repositioning that equities and foreign exchange markets underwent years ago. She noted that institutions like Jane Street and Citadel use dark pools because large trades leave a trail when sitting on one public order book, making them recognizable to other traders who can front-run or push the price against it before the order fills.

This trend is expected to lead to fewer whale-driven shocks for retail investors but also means they will lose most of the whales worth watching. The bull case sees aggregators and prime venues routing retail orders, resulting in tighter spreads, reduced slippage, and a more stable market. However, the bear case warns that visibility disappears faster than promised execution gains materialize for ordinary account sizes.
