Institutional Demand Shifts Beyond ETF Flows as Loan-to-Value Risk Emerges

The recent influx of $999 million into US spot Bitcoin ETFs over seven days is not the only indicator of institutional conviction, according to Ledn's CEO Adam Reeds. The rise and fall of ETF flows can be misleading as institutions can now access Bitcoin through various channels such as spot ETFs, options-income products, and structured credit.

This new landscape makes it essential to look beyond a single wrapper when measuring institutional demand for Bitcoin. As Reeds pointed out, a credit investor can hold Bitcoin as collateral and remain neutral on its near-term price, which reshapes what 'institutional adoption' describes.

Reeds highlighted the importance of considering loan-to-value ratios, liquidation thresholds, secondary-market spreads, and custody concentration when assessing the institutional risk stack around options income, collateralized lending, and structured debt. He noted that credit markets are larger than equity markets, with a bigger pool of potential lenders available.

The Fed's target rate range remaining at 3.50% to 3.75% has been squeezing Bitcoin twice: by dulling appetite for speculative duration and widening spreads on Bitcoin-linked debt. This could be a warning sign for institutions treating Bitcoin collateral as its own credit asset class, which would deepen demand beyond directional buyers and ease volatility in ordinary market conditions.
