Institutional Investors Boosted Crypto Holdings During Bitcoin Bear Market
Despite Bitcoin's recent bear market, a survey of 15 large institutional investors by Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley revealed that none reduced their crypto exposure. In fact, several increased their positions. The group included endowments, corporations, sovereign investors, and pension funds, all of whom maintained or boosted their crypto allocations despite falling prices.
Horsley highlighted the consistency of these responses, noting that institutions remain committed to the asset class. He emphasized that this adoption is often invisible to retail investors, as large investors typically do not publicly announce their positions. Bitwise itself saw roughly $1.8 billion in inflows during the first half of 2026, with preliminary Q3 inflows estimated at around $1 billion.
Another emerging trend is investors swapping directly held crypto into ETF shares to simplify custody and portfolio management. Bitwise observed roughly $60 million to $70 million of such swaps during Q3. Horsley believes Bitcoin investment access is now roughly two-thirds of the way there, although widespread adoption has yet to materialize.
Rising prices remain a key catalyst for attracting mainstream investors. Some viewed falling prices as a buying opportunity, while others delayed allocations due to the lack of urgency. Horsley anticipates that steady positive price performance could create a sense of urgency without making Bitcoin look overheated, a backdrop he believes crypto has now entered.
