Institutional Investors Place Bitcoin in Tech Pockets
A new report by Bitwise shows that despite its classification as 'digital gold,' Bitcoin is often placed in technology or innovation pockets within institutional portfolios.
The survey of 15 major institutions found that all those who hold cryptocurrencies possess BTC, with allocations ranging from 0.5% to 13% of investable assets. The majority hover around 1% to 2%, and family offices tend to be more generous in their allocations.
Interestingly, while investors often refer to Bitcoin as a store of value akin to gold, its classification within the portfolio is often different. One foundation described its crypto allocation as a bet on 'growth and disruption,' while another outright rejected the idea of 'digital gold' and considered cryptocurrencies as disruptive technologies.
The report also found that despite a 50% drop in the crypto market between late 2025 and mid-2026, none of the institutions surveyed reduced their allocation during this period. Several even bought more, with no institution citing a simple Bitcoin price drop as a sufficient reason to sell.
