Institutional Investors' Shift into Bitcoin Raises Questions About AI Rotation

Recent filings from institutional investors suggest that some may be shifting their exposure to Bitcoin-related assets. This has led to speculation about a potential rotation out of artificial intelligence (AI) investments and into cryptocurrencies.

One of the clearest examples of this shift comes from Duquesne Family Office, founded by billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller. In its first-quarter filing, Duquesne reported holdings in Intel and Micron, but neither company appeared in its second-quarter disclosure. At the same time, it established positions in four publicly traded Bitcoin miners: Bitdeer, Riot, Hut 8, and IREN.

The Duquesne portfolio changes blur the line between Bitcoin and AI investments. The mining companies involved have expanded beyond Bitcoin mining to offer data-center capacity for AI workloads. This overlap raises questions about whether Duquesne's move is an exit from AI or a bet on businesses exposed to both digital assets and computing demand.

Three other institutions, Tudor Investment Corporation, Jane Street, and UBS, reported increased exposure to Bitcoin ETFs in their second-quarter filings. However, these positions do not necessarily indicate that investors sold AI holdings to fund the new investments. The type of institution and its motivations also matter: an investment manager may hold an ETF for very different reasons than a global bank.
