Institutional Money Floods Bitcoin, Pushing Price Above $86,000
Bitcoin has surged above $86,000 for the first time since January, but the real story is the $3.8 billion that flowed into US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) over three weeks in late August and early September.
This marks the strongest such run of 2026, with almost $987 million pouring in during the week ending 5 September alone, including a daily inflow of about $731 million on 3 September.
The influx of institutional capital is driving the latest rally, which has pushed Bitcoin above its previous highs despite regulatory uncertainty and tighter monetary conditions.
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust has been a major contributor to the recent demand, accounting for a substantial portion of the net inflows since launch, with total net assets in US spot Bitcoin ETFs reaching about $101 billion by early September.
The ETF market is changing the way institutions own and invest in Bitcoin, providing a familiar regulated wrapper that allows pension funds, wealth managers, and other institutions to gain exposure without managing wallets or private keys directly.
However, experts caution that flows need to be read carefully, as three weeks of strong inflows are evidence of demand, not proof that it is permanent.
