Institutions Dominate Altcoin Trading in First Half of 2026
Institutional investors dominated altcoin trading in the first half of 2026, according to data from Wintermute. The market maker reported that institutional clients generated 72% of all spot flow on their over-the-counter (OTC) desk during this period, a figure up from 61% in the second half of 2025 and 59% in the first half of that year.
This concentration of liquidity among favored tokens could make future altcoin rallies narrower, with gains clustering around fewer assets rather than spreading broadly. Wintermute noted that while retail clients were still trading a wider variety of smaller assets, their participation often didn't fill the gap left by institutional investors after a price surge.
Data from other sources corroborated this trend. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju observed that the traditional rotation of Bitcoin profits into smaller crypto assets had stopped, with altcoin pair volumes near their weakest level since 2021. Meanwhile, Kaiko reported that the 10 largest altcoins represented 63% of total altcoin trading volume in July 2025.
