Interactive Brokers Group has introduced Ethereum staking for eligible clients, allowing them to earn rewards on their ETH holdings directly through the brokerage's Client Portal. The service, provided by zerohash, lets investors stake ETH and receive additional cryptocurrency rewards, which can compound over time. While this feature offers convenience for those managing multi-asset portfolios, it also raises questions about whether the staking rewards justify the investment.
The appeal of staking lies in its ability to generate additional ETH without needing to trade it. However, staking does not protect against price declines, meaning investors can still lose value if ETH's market price falls. The service is not universally available, with eligibility depending on the client's country of residence and the relevant affiliate. At launch, it is only available to eligible Interactive Brokers LLC clients.
Fees are a critical consideration, as Interactive Brokers and zerohash charge a combined fee capped at 30% of staking rewards. This fee structure means investors should compare net returns after fees rather than relying solely on gross reward rates. Additionally, staking rewards are paid in ETH, so their dollar value fluctuates with the token's price, adding another layer of risk.
Liquidity and access are also important factors. Investors should understand the unstaking process and potential delays before withdrawing assets. Moreover, cryptocurrency held through zerohash is not protected by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC), unlike traditional securities in a brokerage account. These considerations highlight the need for investors to assess staking as a separate investment decision rather than treating rewards as free income.
