IREN Limited Stock Crashes 20% Amid Executive Compensation Concerns
Shares of IREN Limited (IREN) plummeted by nearly 20% in July, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. This decline coincided with a broader downturn affecting thematic stocks, as well as concerns within the company.
The main issue is that management awarded itself massive executive compensation packages, worth $832 million at the time of grant. With IREN's market cap standing at just $14 billion, this significant portion of outstanding shares has sparked investor skepticism.
IREN was initially established as a cryptocurrency miner but shifted its focus to cloud computing and data centers for AI compute. The company secured a major contract with Nvidia worth $3.4 billion, with plans to deploy 5 gigawatts of computing power globally by the end of next year.
However, investors are uncertain about IREN's ability to execute on this vision due to its cash flow situation. With an annual burn rate of $2.2 billion in free cash flow and a dwindling cash balance that will be depleted within 12 months, the company faces significant liquidity challenges. Moreover, it is already taking on substantial debt to fund infrastructure development.
As IREN strives to build its data center business, it must navigate this precarious financial situation while competing with other established players in the AI compute market.
