Iren Ltd. Unveils $30 Billion AI Infrastructure Plan Amid Cloud Computing Shift
Iren Ltd., a Sydney-based company, is embarking on an ambitious plan to spend between $25 billion and $30 billion in fiscal 2027 on AI infrastructure. This massive investment will be used to deploy approximately 1.2 gigawatts of AI-focused data center capacity, which has already secured roughly $19 billion in recent financing. The funds will also be used to decommission bitcoin mining equipment as the company shifts its resources towards larger cloud deployments.
The transition is significant, as Iren Ltd. is effectively repositioning itself from a cryptocurrency miner into a major supplier of computing power for AI workloads. To finance this expansion, the company has announced that it will rely on $14 billion in cash, existing GPU financing, and customer prepayments, while also pursuing an additional $8 billion in financing tied to GPUs and data center infrastructure.
Analysts have expressed both optimism and caution about Iren Ltd.'s plans. While some are bullish on the company's ability to convert its massive capital outlays into recurring AI revenue, others have raised concerns about execution and financing risks, as well as tighter margins and supply chain risk.
