IREN Secures $2.8 Billion in Financing for AI Computing Pivot

Data center firm IREN has made significant moves in its pivot from bitcoin mining to AI computing. The company signed a multi-year contract with a frontier AI lab and secured $2.8 billion in new financing, which includes a $2.4 billion facility led by Blue Owl and Pacific Investment Management Company.

The funding will be mainly used for purchasing AI chips, as IREN shifts its focus from bitcoin-mining rigs to renting out AI compute capacity. This transition has been costly, with the company posting a $684 million net loss in the latest quarter due to a $450.4 million non-cash impairment tied to decommissioning its old hardware.

However, IREN claims that its 2026 compute capacity is largely sold out and it's in late-stage talks with customers for a significant portion of 2027 capacity. This could potentially turn the company's heavy spending into contracted, repeatable revenue, making fixed financing costs manageable.
