IREN Surpasses Riot in AI Computing Transition
IREN Limited and Riot Platforms are two companies that have built large Bitcoin mining operations, but they differ in their transition to AI computing.
Both IREN and RIOT have secured access to power, land, and data center infrastructure, providing a credible route into AI without starting from scratch. However, IREN is rapidly becoming an AI cloud operator by combining data centers, GPUs, and software while planning to wind down Bitcoin mining by the end of 2026.
Riot Platforms, on the other hand, is taking a more gradual approach, keeping a sizable mining business while developing and leasing powered data center capacity to customers such as AMD and a frontier AI lab. This lease model offers durable potential cash flows, but the transition to AI is progressing at a measured pace.
IREN's growth case rests on its ability to quickly move its AI business from promise to contracted demand, with 2026 capacity largely sold out and more than $4 billion of contracted annualized run-rate revenues. The company has signed or expanded relationships with AI developers and enterprises, including Cohere, Prometheus, Perplexity, and Figure AI.
Riot Platforms' AI strategy is centered around long-duration data center leases rather than a full-stack cloud offering, with 241 MW of critical IT capacity contracted across AMD and a leading frontier AI lab. However, much of its major AI capacity will arrive later, making IREN the better stock to consider for investors focused on growth.
