IRS Scammers Use Fake Letters, QR Codes to Target Crypto Holders

Share

The IRS has issued a warning about a sophisticated phishing scam targeting crypto holders. Scammers are sending fake official letters to recipients, instructing them to sign up for a non-existent Digital Asset Compliance Portal.

The letters appear to be from the IRS and contain official formatting, including a QR code that links to a spoofed IRS website designed to harvest personal data.

The agency has increased scrutiny of digital asset reporting, making the compliance portal seem entirely plausible to some recipients. However, the IRS confirms it does not operate any digital asset enrollment portal and never asks taxpayers to transfer digital assets as part of a compliance process.
