IRS Warns of Cryptocurrency Phishing Scams

Share

A new wave of phishing scams has been targeting US cryptocurrency holders, claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The scammers send letters with official-looking notices, directing recipients to a website called the 'Digital Asset Compliance Portal'.

This is not an actual IRS initiative, and the website is designed to steal personal details and digital assets.

The letters are so convincing that even Coinbase's security team had trouble spotting them as scams. They claim to be from the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Austin, TX, with a notice number (CP14-432RA) and reference to the tax year range 2017-2026.

The phishing page visited by potential victims uses IRS-style branding and asks for sensitive information such as where cryptocurrency is stored and its estimated value.
