IRS Warns of Fake Crypto Letters Targeting Financial Info

Share

The IRS has issued a warning about fake letters targeting cryptocurrency holders, which aim to capture sensitive financial information.

The counterfeit letters direct recipients toward a nonexistent 'Digital Asset Compliance Portal' and include QR codes that lead victims to websites built to resemble the official IRS.gov.

Criminals seek wallet details, exchange logins, and personal data through these fake portals, exploiting growing anxiety over crypto tax compliance.

IRS-CI Chief Jarod Koopman warned that 'criminals continue to exploit public trust in government agencies' by creating convincing fake websites and official-looking correspondence.
