IRS Warns of Fake Letters Targeting Crypto Holders

Share

Scammers are targeting cryptocurrency holders with fake IRS letters in an attempt to steal their personal information and digital assets.

The IRS-CI unit warned that fraudsters are mailing fake letters claiming recipients must enroll in a nonexistent 'Digital Asset Compliance Portal' before a deadline, directing them to a fraudulent website that mimics IRS.gov.

The site may ask for sensitive data such as personal information, cryptocurrency wallet details, or exchange account credentials, which scammers can use to steal identities or digital assets.

According to the IRS-CI, online platform Coinbase and cybersecurity firm DarkTower traced the infrastructure behind this scheme to a domain registered through a Hong Kong registrar.
