IRS Warns of Phishing Scam Using Fake Crypto Compliance Letters

The IRS has issued a warning about a new phishing campaign targeting crypto holders, using fake 'Digital Asset Compliance' letters and QR-linked lookalike sites to harvest personal information and steal cryptocurrencies. The scammers claim that users must register on a given site by scanning the QR code within an urgent deadline, or face penalties. However, this is a scam designed to mine unsuspecting users' personal data and impersonate them.

The IRS-CI Chief Jarod Koopman commented on the matter, saying 'Criminals continue to exploit public trust in government agencies by creating convincing fake websites and official-looking correspondence.'

In another incident, Senator Cynthia Lummis' X account was briefly hacked to promote a new Solana meme token called USA for about five minutes before removal. The timing coincided with the Senator's push for the CLARITY Act.
