Italian Bank Loses €95 Million in Sophisticated AI Voice Scam
A sophisticated AI voice scam targeting Fideuram bank in Italy has resulted in losses of approximately €95 million. The attack, which took place in February 2026, involved a fake WhatsApp message impersonating Intesa Sanpaolo CEO Carlo Messina and an AI-generated voice call mimicking lawyer Paolo Nastasi.
Former Fideuram Chairman Paolo Molesini received the message and subsequent call, which convinced him to authorize massive overseas transfers. The funds were wired to accounts in mainland China, Hong Kong, and other destinations, with at least €36 million eventually converted into cryptocurrency.
Fideuram managed to recover around €40 million of the stolen total, while Portuguese authorities froze an additional €13 million. The remaining funds are now being tracked through international judicial cooperation.
