Italian authorities have launched a major crackdown on a suspected mafia-linked money-laundering operation that exploited cryptocurrencies to move illicit funds. On Wednesday, prosecutors in Milan announced the arrest of 30 individuals accused of running an underground banking network. The group allegedly transferred approximately €68 million abroad while using cryptocurrencies to launder money derived from drug trafficking and fraudulent corporate activities.
The investigation, conducted by Italy’s financial police, revealed a sophisticated system that combined cash from illegal sources with conventional bank accounts to facilitate the transfers. The network then converted the funds into cryptocurrencies, utilizing digital wallets to obscure the origins of the money. This operation highlights the growing concern over the use of cryptocurrencies in financial crimes.
Prosecutors emphasized the international scope of the operation, noting that the illicit funds were moved across Europe. The arrests mark a significant step in disrupting organized crime’s financial networks, though authorities caution that similar operations may still exist undetected.
