The annual Jackson Hole economic symposium is about to begin in Wyoming, and this year's theme is 'Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy'. The Kansas City Fed's event will attract around 120 central bankers, economists, and officials from August 27-29. However, the conference has attracted controversy due to its overlap with a crypto-focused event held earlier this month in Jackson Hole.

The Wyoming Blockchain Symposium, which took place between August 17-20, featured about 500 guests discussing digital assets, including executives, investors, and lawmakers. The symposium was attended by notable figures such as Michael Novogratz from Galaxy, Arjun Sethi from Kraken, Denelle Dixon from Stellar, and US lawmakers Cynthia Lummis and Tim Scott.

The Kansas City Fed's symposium has listed crypto and stablecoins alongside instant payments and other digital payment systems in its agenda. This move has been seen as a recognition of the growing importance of cryptocurrencies in the financial landscape. The Federal Reserve will focus on payment technology, which could have significant implications for central banks and their role in monetary policy.

The overlap between crypto and traditional finance (TradFi) has become increasingly apparent, with stablecoins being pegged to the US dollar becoming a major issue. Stablecoin issuers hold Treasury bills, cash, and other short-term assets against tokens redeemable at $1, making them a potential threat to central banks' control over monetary policy.

The GENIUS Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump in July 2025, has given regulators the authority to define rules for stablecoins. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has set a deadline of November for finalizing its implementation rule, which could have significant implications for the stablecoin market.

Bitcoin's price is likely to react to any statements made by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh during his keynote speech on Friday. The inflation picture will be discussed, with headline and core prices up 0.2% in July and annual rates at 3.7% and 3.3%, respectively.
