Jane Street Unveils Record-Breaking $990M Bitcoin ETF Stake Amidst Historic Loss
Jane Street, a major market maker and quantitative trading firm, revealed a nearly $1 billion Bitcoin ETF position in a recent SEC filing. The disclosure came just weeks after the company reported its worst month in about a decade, losing $15 billion in July.
The large stake is primarily held in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), with Jane Street owning roughly $828 million of this ETF as of June 30th. However, it's essential to note that the firm operates mainly as a market maker and authorized participant across various spot Bitcoin ETFs.
This pattern has precedent, with Jane Street cutting its IBIT stake by 71% in the first quarter of 2026 while building up an ether ETF position over the same period. This swing looks more like rotating inventory than conviction investing, as large swings in a market maker's holdings often reflect hedging flow rather than sentiment.
The company's significant loss was largely attributed to its stake in Situational Awareness, an artificial intelligence hedge fund that faced margin calls and subsequent fire sales of its stock portfolio. In contrast, Jane Street has still posted over $40 billion in trading revenue this year, exceeding the record it set in 2025.
