Japan Launches Dedicated Crypto Unit Amid Regulatory Overhaul
Japan has created a new division dedicated to overseeing cryptocurrencies and stablecoins within its Financial Services Agency (FSA). The Cryptocurrency and Stablecoin Division, which began operating on August 7th, brings together crypto supervision, innovation, and digital payment planning under one department. This move is part of Japan's ongoing efforts to strengthen its regulatory framework for digital assets.
The new division follows the recent reclassification of cryptocurrencies as financial instruments under Japan's Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. The law amendments introduced stricter regulations, including insider trading restrictions and increased penalties for unregistered businesses. According to the legislation, the maximum prison sentence for operating an unregistered cryptocurrency business will increase from three years to 10 years.
The creation of the standalone division is intended to enhance the FSA's ability to supervise financial institutions as technology continues to evolve. The new division will oversee three specialized offices: the Cryptocurrency Monitoring Office, Innovation Promotion Office, and Digital Payment Planning Office.
