Japan Sanctions Crypto Exchange Garantex as Part of Expanded Russia Restrictions
Japan has expanded its sanctions against Russia by adding the cryptocurrency exchange Garantex to its asset freeze list. The move, announced on October 2, 2026, targets 33 entities and nine individuals alongside Garantex. The restrictions aim to curb payments and capital transactions involving these designated parties.
Garantex's inclusion in Japan's sanctions list follows previous actions taken by the United States, European Union, and other jurisdictions. These authorities have accused the exchange of aiding Russian entities in evading financial sanctions, leading to its global regulatory scrutiny.
The latest sanctions package also includes measures against 35 vessels linked to Russia's so-called "shadow fleet." These restrictions cover service and financing, broadening Japan's financial constraints beyond cryptocurrency exchanges to maritime activities connected with Russia.
The asset freeze and vessel-related restrictions represent Japan's latest efforts to intensify financial pressure on Russia. Garantex, now facing restrictions across multiple jurisdictions, continues to be a focal point in international sanctions efforts against Russia.
