Japan Sanctions Garantex Amid Rising Crypto Compliance Risks
Japan has taken a firm stance against cryptocurrency exchange Garantex by placing it under sanctions.
The move, which came into effect on October 2, 2026, requires government approval for all dealings with Garantex and adds to the complex compliance maze that financial institutions must navigate.
Japan's sanctions follow a broader strategy aimed at Russia, mirroring actions taken by the U.S. and EU in response to Russia's aggressive tactics in Ukraine.
Garantex has been linked to illicit activities since its launch in 2019, with the U.S. Treasury red-flagging the exchange in April 2022 due to connections to criminal enterprises and transactions worth over $100 million.
