Japan Slams Brakes on Russian Oil Exports with Expanded Sanctions
Japan has expanded its sanctions regime against Russia to include cryptocurrency exchange Garantex and dozens of other targets. The move adds 33 organizations, nine individuals, and 35 ships linked to Russia to Japan's asset-freeze list.
The restrictions now cover Garantex, which has already faced sanctions from the U.S., the EU, and other jurisdictions over allegations that it helped Russian entities evade financial curbs. Under Japan's framework, the designation restricts payments and capital transactions with listed parties.
Japan also designates 35 vessels identified as part of the shadow fleet that carries Russian oil. The measures specifically restrict services including repairs and insurance for those ships.
The sanctions are intended to help reduce Russia's earnings from crude oil exports, underscoring a broader effort to tighten pressure on financing routes tied to the war in Ukraine.
