Japan's Bond Yields Spike, Threatening Metaplanet's Bitcoin Buying Strategy
Japan's government bond auction results have significant implications for Metaplanet's corporate strategy of buying Bitcoin. The company relies on low-cost borrowing to fund its purchases, but a recent auction saw yields rise sharply.
The September 3 auction cleared at an average yield of 4.079% for 30-year bonds, up from 3.937% in August. This increase raises the cost of borrowing for Metaplanet and threatens its ability to fund large-scale Bitcoin purchases.
Metaplanet's existing fixed obligations, such as its ¥8 billion zero-coupon bond maturing on April 23, 2027, remain unaffected by the yield rise. However, future debt issuances will face higher interest rates, narrowing Metaplanet's funding advantage.
The company's BitBonds, which pay fixed coupons ranging from 4.0% to 4.3%, are at a premium of around 214-244 basis points compared to the estimated three-year sovereign benchmark of 1.8597%. This premium will add pressure on Metaplanet's credit spread and make future issuances more expensive.
