Japan’s Crypto Spot Trading Volume Rises 13.4% in August
The Japan Virtual and Crypto Assets Exchange Association (JVCEA) reported that the spot trading volume of cryptocurrencies in Japan rose to 764.35 billion yen in August 2026, marking a 13.4% increase from the previous month. This rebound comes after a decline from June's 904.87 billion yen to July's 674.18 billion yen. However, compared to August 2025, the trading volume was down 61.9% from 2.70 trillion yen.
Bitcoin (BTC) dominated the spot trading volume with 462.86 billion yen, accounting for approximately 60.6% of the total. Ethereum (ETH) followed with 139.2 billion yen, and XRP (XRP) with 102.66 billion yen. These top three cryptocurrencies made up about 92.2% of the total trading volume.
Other notable cryptocurrencies included Solana (SOL) with 17.53 billion yen, Dogecoin (DOGE) with 7.63 billion yen, and Stellar (XLM) with 5.83 billion yen. The JVCEA's statistics only include cryptocurrencies handled by three or more member exchanges.
As of August 31, 2026, the total deposited funds by users reached 3.51 trillion yen, a 22.2% increase from the previous month. Of this amount, 3.28 trillion yen was in cryptocurrency assets, and 229.81 billion yen was in fiat. The number of registered user accounts increased by 190,953 to 14.47 million, while active accounts rose by 116,584 to 8.98 million.
