Japan's FSA Seeks Record-Budget Boost for Crypto Oversight
The Financial Services Agency (FSA) in Japan is pushing for a record-high budget of approximately 40 billion yen for fiscal year 2027, a significant increase of around 60% from the previous year. The primary goal behind this increased funding is to enhance the agency's oversight capabilities in the digital finance sector, particularly with regards to cryptocurrency operators.
The FSA aims to establish a robust monitoring system for crypto exchange operators and expand its specialist staffing to address potential risks associated with frontier AI. Additionally, the agency plans to build a foundation for AI-based market surveillance and strengthen cyber security measures for financial institutions.
The budget also includes provisions for supporting regional financial institutions through demonstration projects and talent matching. The FSA will promote growth and business restructuring for local companies by conducting training programs for employees of regional banks and credit associations.
