Japan's SMBC Nikko Partners with Uniswap for Compliant DeFi Gateway
SMBC Nikko Securities and Nethermind have partnered with Uniswap Labs, Base, and the Nyx Foundation to develop a Japan-focused decentralized finance (DeFi) gateway. The five-party plan aims to build compliant liquidity pools using Uniswap v4 hooks that enforce anti-money laundering, counterterrorism financing, and investor protection controls.
The project targets completion by mid-2027, with no live product launched yet and no public approval from Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA). SMBC Nikko leads regulatory discussions and contributes compliance, risk modeling, and portfolio management expertise. Nethermind handles technical design and delivery across engineering, AI integration, and smart-contract security.
The Uniswap v4 hooks framework will add mechanisms for checking issuer-managed allowlists before approved wallets can swap or provide liquidity. The partners are also exploring agentic vaults, systems that use AI tools to support or execute investment decisions within predefined parameters. Base contributes technical feedback around x402, an open payment protocol developed by Coinbase.
The Japan-focused DeFi gateway is significant because it marks one of the few major markets where a large securities house has moved from observing DeFi to signing a development agreement with core infrastructure providers.
