JPMorgan Accepts Crypto as Collateral for Loans
JPMorgan Chase is accepting Bitcoin and Ethereum as collateral for U.S. dollar loans through its Kinexys digital assets platform, marking a significant shift in the bank's stance on cryptocurrency.
The program allows institutional clients to pledge crypto holdings with third-party custodians such as Fidelity Digital Assets or Coinbase Custody, which hold the tokens and provide custody receipts to JPMorgan. The bank receives these receipts and records the pledge on its permissioned blockchain, allowing clients to receive U.S. dollar loans backed by their crypto assets.
The mechanics of the program mirror traditional securities lending, with real-time price feeds from oracle providers like Chainlink continuously updating the valuation of pledged assets. If the value drops below a predetermined threshold, the system issues a margin call, requiring clients to deposit additional collateral or repay part of the loan.
JPMorgan's reported haircuts for Bitcoin collateral range between 30% and 50%, acknowledging the asset's volatility while still treating it as meaningfully pledgeable. The initial rollout targets high-net-worth clients and institutional players, with internal documents suggesting a phased expansion to qualified retail investors by mid-2027.
