Kakao Group Partners with Fireblocks to Explore Stablecoin Infrastructure in South Korea
Kakao Pay and KakaoBank have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Fireblocks to explore stablecoin infrastructure in South Korea. The agreement aims to test digital asset distribution frameworks that meet regulatory, security, and service requirements for the country's financial sector.
The three companies will run proof-of-concept tests, covering various aspects of stablecoins, including their use case, technical design, and potential benefits for Korean institutions. Fireblocks' platform has been deployed by over 2,500 institutions, including more than 100 banks, and supports custody, settlement, and tokenization operations across multiple blockchains.
The partnership follows Kakao Group's previous agreement with Circle in July, which focused on stablecoin payments, blockchain settlement, and digital asset infrastructure. The MoU with Fireblocks introduces another infrastructure provider into Kakao Group's research without replacing or ending the Circle arrangement.
