Kalshi Traders Bet Big on September CPI Uptick
The prediction market on Kalshi has seen a surge in activity as traders bet on a higher-than-expected Consumer Price Index (CPI) reading for September. According to the data, nearly everyone expects CPI to rise, but the real debate is how much.
The contract for a month-over-month CPI increase above 0.4% trades at 90 cents, implying a 90% probability. Economists at Continuum Economics have penciled in a 0.6% monthly rise, which would push annual inflation noticeably higher.
As of now, the crowd on Kalshi is clustered mostly in the 0.4% to 0.5% zone. The year-over-year contracts tell a similar story, with prices somewhere in a band from 3.5% to 3.7%. Continuum Economics sees things running a bit hotter than what Kalshi traders are pricing.
The factors behind the expected uptick are rising energy prices and a favorable economic environment, both of which tend to push headline CPI higher. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is scheduled to publish September CPI data on October 14, 2026, and it will be interesting to see if the actual reading matches the expectations.
