Kalshi Withdraws Pepe Meme Coin Futures Proposal After CFTC Filing
Prediction market Kalshi recently filed a proposal with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to introduce perpetual futures contracts tied to the Pepe meme coin. The filing came as a surprise, given the volatile nature of meme coins and the regulatory scrutiny they often face. However, just two days after submitting the proposal, Kalshi withdrew its application, leaving the crypto community speculating about the reasons behind this sudden reversal.
The platform had previously listed perpetual futures contracts for other popular meme coins, including Dogecoin and Shiba Inu. These offerings had not faced any immediate regulatory pushback, making the withdrawal of the Pepe-related proposal particularly noteworthy. The move suggests that Kalshi may have encountered unexpected regulatory hurdles or internal considerations related to the Pepe coin.
Pepe, like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, is a cryptocurrency that gained popularity largely due to its association with internet memes and community-driven hype. Its inclusion in Kalshi’s offerings would have provided traders with a new way to speculate on its price movements. The withdrawal of the proposal, however, indicates that the path to offering such products is not always straightforward, even for established platforms.
