Kazakhstan Hopes Flare Gas Can Revive Crypto Mining Industry
Kazakhstan is reviving its crypto mining industry by leveraging flare gas energy. This shift aims to address the country's aging infrastructure, which was strained by the energy footprint of miners in 2021.
After President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree in July calling for a bill to enable companies to utilize gas opportunities in digital mining, interest from miners has increased. Daniyar Mubarakov, Head of the Blockchain and Digital Mining Association, stated that miners are ready to purchase equipment to convert flare gas into usable power.
The estimated total flared gas production in Kazakhstan is 1.2-1.3 TWh, which could power medium or large digital centers or bitcoin mining farms depending on location. This 'win-win' association allows oil companies to sell the gas at lower prices while avoiding disposal fees that can reach millions.
Technical Director Batyr Bauyrzhan highlighted that this solution enables miners to lock in power prices for years and avoid fluctuating grid-based tariffs. The Ministry of Energy estimates that up to 60 oil fields produce flare gas, presenting ample opportunities for companies to set up shop.
