Kazakhstan Hopes Flared Gas Will Fuel Crypto Mining Boom
Kazakhstan is exploring an innovative solution to its crypto mining energy woes. The country plans to repurpose flared gas from oil fields to power cryptocurrency mining operations.
The proposal involves oil companies providing associated petroleum gas, a byproduct of drilling that's usually burned off, to miners. Miners would then convert the gas into electricity on-site and use it to power their rigs.
According to estimates, the country's flared gas could generate up to 1.3 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity for crypto mining. This comes from 60 oil fields that could be involved in the initiative.
The idea addresses Kazakhstan's energy challenges following China's crackdown on mining in 2021. The sudden influx of miners led to power shortages and put pressure on the outdated energy system. To mitigate this, the government tightened regulations on miner access to power.
