Kazakhstan Taps Flared Gas for Crypto Mining Power
Kazakhstan is seeking to address its energy challenges by turning flared oil field gas into electricity for crypto mining. The country's blockchain and digital mining association estimates that the unused gas could produce between 1.2 and 1.3 terawatt-hours of electricity.
The idea is particularly relevant because Kazakhstan struggled to balance its growing power needs with those of its burgeoning crypto-mining industry, which grew rapidly after China cracked down on mining in 2021.
Under the proposed setup, oil companies would hand over associated petroleum gas to crypto miners, who would then use it to power their rigs. This approach would help minimize pressure on the national grid and provide a new revenue stream for oil producers.
