Korea Confirms Crypto Tax for January 2027
South Korea's long-awaited crypto tax has been confirmed to take effect on January 1, 2027. According to Deputy Prime Minister Koo Yun-cheol, the government will push forward with the plan as scheduled.
The tax rate will be 22%, with a 20% national rate kicking in above a threshold of KRW 2.5 million (approximately $1,740). Investors who earn below this amount will pay nothing, but those who exceed it will face the higher rate.
Kim Sang-hoon of the opposition People Power Party warned that barring investors from offsetting losses against future gains could drive activity to overseas exchanges and hurt domestic liquidity. He also suggested waiting until the OECD's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework is fully operational.
