Korean Retail Investors Flock Back to Crypto as Bitcoin Surges
South Korea's crypto exchanges are experiencing a surge in trading volume after months of decline. Upbit, the country's largest exchange, saw its volume jump by 273% in a single day to $1.84 billion on August 21, its strongest session since mid-March. Bithumb, the second-largest exchange, followed with a 132.9% increase to $934.9 million.
The surge is attributed to Bitcoin's rally past $77,000, which has brought Korean retail investors back into the market. However, experts warn that this may not be a sustainable trend. For most of 2026, South Korean investors had abandoned crypto in favor of equities, which offered better returns.
The KOSPI index, powered by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, was the world's best-performing equity benchmark for much of the year. However, it entered 'bear territory' in late June, falling more than 30% from its peak. This led to a rotation of Korean retail investors into U.S. stocks, with $4.6 billion pouring in during July alone.
However, the current Bitcoin rally may be short-lived. One Bernstein note described the move as the 'first genuine demand signal since spring', but cautioned that sustained follow-through in spot volume across multiple sessions is needed to confirm this trend.
