Korean Retail Investors Flock to Leveraged Cryptocurrency Products Amid Consolidation
Bitcoin has entered a consolidation phase after reaching $81,237 on August 25, its highest point in over three months. Despite this, South Korean retail investors are continuing to pour money into 2x leveraged ETFs linked to the cryptocurrency.
The Korea Securities Depository reported that from August 1 to 25, U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net inflows of $3.05 billion. This buying pressure persisted even as Bitcoin traded sideways around the $80,000 level.
According to Volatility Shares' data, their 2x Ether ETF (ETHU) recorded net purchases of $20,568,607 over the week ending August 25, entering the top 20. The 2x Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITX) and ProShares Ultra Bitcoin ETF (BITU) posted net inflows of $11,011,684 and $6,515,961, respectively.
These leveraged products have seen steep returns recently, with ETHU surging 62.4% over the past week, while BITX and BITU each climbed more than 47%. However, experts warn that adding leverage on top of already volatile cryptocurrencies means losses during sideways movement or price corrections could be larger than expected.
Investors are flocking to these products due to strong short-term momentum in cryptocurrencies. However, the structural risks of leveraged products can intensify in sideways markets like the current one following Bitcoin's sharp rally. It is essential for investors to thoroughly understand the product structure before investing.
