Korean Scammers Use Fake Mail Notices to Phish for Cryptocurrency
A new phishing scam has emerged in some areas of Korea, where fraudsters post fake mail delivery notices on front doors or in mailboxes to induce victims to make phone calls.
The scammers then pose as investigative authorities, claiming that the victim's name or bank account is linked to a crime and demand cash, gift certificates, or virtual assets. The victims are also persuaded to install malicious applications before being asked for cryptocurrency.
According to the National Police Agency and other authorities, cases have emerged in which scammers distributed fake mail-arrival notices in bulk on September 26. When contacted by a victim, the scammer poses as a mail carrier and provides a contact number for further information. The fraudster on that line then impersonates a prosecutor or another investigative official.
