Korea's Financial Intelligence Unit to Leverage Chainalysis in Crypto Crime Tracking Efforts
The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) in South Korea is seeking to adopt Chainalysis's on-chain data solution to strengthen its tracking of crypto crime proceeds. The system aims to link and analyze fund transfers between domestic and overseas virtual-asset exchanges and electronic wallets, with a focus on detecting flows tied to suspicious money-laundering transactions.
The FIU plans to allocate $1.4 million for the project, as reported in the National Assembly's budget funding. This move comes as the number of FIU reviews and analyses of suspicious money-laundering transactions has been rising, with 44,680 cases last year compared to 26,692 in 2023.
The on-chain data solution will enable authorities to trace movements on the blockchain even if proceeds from a voice-phishing scam are converted into virtual assets and transferred to an overseas exchange or personal wallet. This increased transparency is expected to aid in the prevention of crypto-related crimes.
